The final tip in this series focused on reducing your risk of breast cancer is @knowyourlemons! Check out the brilliant app which shows you exactly what to do & what to look for, set yourself a reminder, and do it! Obviously this doesn't prevent breast cancer but it can help you pick up any changes early, which can then be investigated. #knowyourlemons #breastcancer #prevention
Vitamin D is so important for balancing components of our immune system. Down here in the deep dark south of NZ, the elevation angle of the sun is too low over winter for our bodies to generate Vitamin D. I love the app D-Minder for checking Vitamin D availability where you are, and tracking how much you are getting. I also recommend getting your levels tested and supplementing if they are low, particularly if you can't get regular access to sun on your skin. #breastcancer #prevention
Exercise is one of the most effective tools we have for reducing risk, improving recovery and decreasing recurrence of breast cancer. Incorporate moderate-to-vigorous exercise for a minimum of 30 minutes at least 5 times a week to see the benefits. You can break this up into smaller amounts over the course of the day if you are struggling to find the time. #breastcancer #prevention
Chronic stress activates inflammatory processes as well as suppressing the immune system by reducing the number of natural killer (NK) cells which destroy cancer cells. It's not always easy to avoid stressors so it's important to improve our resilience to stress so that the body can recover quickly from the "flight or fight" response and return to a state of rest, digest and repair. The good news is that you can increase the levels of NK cells with laughter, meditation, yoga, and exercise. #breastcancer #prevention
Often this is the one that women find the hardest - putting themselves first. We are so often used to looking after everyone else's needs that there is no time or energy left to nurture our own wellbeing. Take stock emotionally, socially and spiritually and find ways to put yourself first. #breastcancer #prevention
